The Hawkesbury community is mourning the sudden passing of Maryann Jenkins, former Editor of the Gazette, a woman remembered not only for her professionalism and fierce commitment to local journalism, but for her kindness, humour and unwavering humanity.

Since December, Maryann had been bravely fighting a rare autoimmune illness that affected her heart. Despite her strength and determination, she passed away in hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Colleague Damien Tomlinson and also past General Manager of the Gazette paid tribute this week, saying:

“She was a significant impact on the paper, staff and community. She was always kind and generous in everything she did.”

Those simple words capture what so many across the Hawkesbury are feeling a deep sense of loss for someone who gave so much to this community.

A Journalist Who Cared About People

Maryann believed that local news mattered because local people matter. She understood that behind every council decision, community debate, school achievement, business milestone or sporting victory were real families and real lives.

Her leadership in the newsroom was marked by integrity and balance. She encouraged stories that celebrated the Hawkesbury’s resilience, its small businesses, its volunteers and its everyday heroes. She understood that a local paper is more than ink on a page it is the heartbeat of a community.

Colleagues describe her as supportive, quick-witted and deeply compassionate. She mentored young journalists, guided contributors with patience, and never lost sight of the responsibility that comes with telling other people’s stories.

A Devoted Mother and Friend

Beyond her professional life, Maryann was devoted to her family. She is survived by her beloved son, Bradley, who was the centre of her world.

Friends say that even while facing serious illness, Maryann remained focused on those around her checking in, offering encouragement, and maintaining her characteristic grace.

Her Facebook page, Maryann Emmcee, has become a place of tribute and remembrance, with friends, colleagues and community members sharing messages, memories and gratitude for the impact she made.

A Legacy That Lives On

In regional communities like ours, the role of an editor carries enormous weight. It requires courage, fairness and a deep understanding of local issues. Maryann brought all of that and more to the Gazette.

She helped shape conversations, elevate community voices and ensure that the stories of the Hawkesbury were told with care and respect.

While her passing leaves a profound void, her legacy endures in the countless stories she helped bring to life, the journalists she supported, and the community she served so faithfully.

On behalf of all who knew her, worked with her, and read the pages she helped produce, we extend our deepest condolences to Bradley and her family.

Maryann Jenkins will be remembered not only as a dedicated editor, but as a remarkable woman whose heart even while fighting illness remained firmly with her community.

Vale, Maryann.
