Almost two years after the $100 million upgrade to Bells Line of Road was announced, planning has entered a new stage. Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is now consulting directly with the Bells Line of Road Business Council (BLOR BC) and other local stakeholders to decide how the money will be spent.

“This funding is an opportunity to create a safer road that helps shape our future,” said BLOR BC Director Fiona Germaine. “We don’t just want another freight highway — we want a road that supports our towns, our tourism economy, and our heritage surroundings.”

The BLOR Business Council’s independent survey, completed by over 150 residents and business owners, has already shaped the priorities now under discussion. Top community requests include:

  • More overtaking lanes and safer intersections
  • Better pull-over zones and emergency refuge areas
  • Wildlife warning signs and safety barriers
  • Curve realignments in high-risk sections

Why It’s Urgent

Bells Line of Road is more than a scenic drive — it’s a lifeline. The road has a higher-than-average crash rate and is prone to closures during floods, bushfires, and storms. For residents, tourists, and businesses in Bilpin, Kurrajong, and beyond, safer and more reliable access is essential.

“The region has endured floods, bushfires, and repeated closures — this upgrade comes none too soon,” said MP Susan Templeman.

What’s Next

TfNSW will spend the coming months working with BLOR BC, local councils, and community members to refine upgrade proposals.

Timeline

  • June–Aug 2025 — Community and business consultation sessions
  • Late 2025 — Public release of shortlisted upgrades
  • Early 2026 — Final business case prepared for funding release and delivery

Projects under consideration include overtaking lanes, curve realignments, improved safety barriers, and intersection upgrades — with an emphasis on minimising impacts on the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

Bigger Than Just a Road

BLOR BC President Marg Tadrosse summed it up: “We aren’t just advocating for roads — we’re advocating for livelihoods, tourism, and the safety of everyone who lives here, visits here, or relies on this road in an emergency.”

With community feedback now embedded in the process, the $100 million investment is set to deliver improvements that work for locals first — ensuring the Bells Line remains a safe, scenic, and sustainable route for decades to come.
