A colourful new mural is bringing fresh energy and pride to the Glossodia Community Centre, thanks to an idea that began with the area’s youngest voices.
The concept originated from the local youth group, who began discussions about how to make the community centre more appealing and engaging for young people. Inspired by their enthusiasm, Centre Manager Rae Brown and colleague Rebecca Griffin set out to find a local artist who could help bring the vision to life and transform the space. Their search led them to long-time Glossodia resident Matt Charnley, who has called the area home for more than 30 years.
For Matt, the project was deeply personal.
“I was inspired by the idea of creating something meaningful for the kids in our community,” he said. “But it also felt special knowing my grandson is now part of this community too. He’ll be attending the local school and spending time here at the centre as he grows up.”
Working together, Rae, Rebecca and Matt decided on a theme that reflected the natural beauty of Glossodia its land, native animals and, of course, the iconic Glossodia orchid. The result is a vibrant and detailed artwork that celebrates the unique character of the local area.
The mural took approximately 12 weeks to complete. Due to centre access and scheduling, Matt worked steadily at an average of two, sometimes three hours per week, carefully building layer upon layer of detail. Throughout the process, children from the centre watched the artwork evolve.
“Creating this piece was such a great experience,” Matt said. “Seeing the kids watch it come to life and hearing their comments about how much they love it has been incredibly rewarding.”
A particularly meaningful highlight for Matt was the opportunity to make it a family affair. His grandson Carter contributed a small piece of artwork to the mural, and Matt’s daughters also joined him in adding their own touches to the finished piece. For Centre Manager Rae Brown, the mural has already become more than just decoration.
“The mural has become like a ‘Where’s Wally’ for many of the OOSH (before and afterschool care) kids,” Rae said. “It’s such a pleasure seeing them trying to find all the hidden animals within the mural and discovering things they hadn’t noticed before.” Beyond brightening the walls, the mural stands as a symbol of collaboration sparked by young people, supported by community leaders and brought to life by a local artist with deep roots in the area.
The finished artwork not only livens up the centre, but reflects the pride, creativity and connection that define the Glossodia community. An official opening of the mural is being organised.
"This mural is a Hawkesbury love story. Matt d0nated his time and creativity, Bunnings contributed to the paint and Rae took care of the incidentials and more, and Glossy kids gave their energy and joy. This is a community working together with love." Hawkesbury Gazette
