Hawkesbury City Council has clarified how it prioritises road maintenance across the local government area following the appearance of a sign on Lower Colo Road that raised concerns among residents about road conditions.
The Gazette understands questions were raised after a sign was photographed on Lower Colo Road, prompting speculation that it may have been placed by Council in response to community complaints.
In response to enquiries from the Hawkesbury Gazette, a Council spokesperson said the sign pictured was not installed by Hawkesbury City Council.
“Council confirms that the sign pictured is not a Council sign,” the spokesperson said.
Council explained that road maintenance across the Hawkesbury is guided by its Transport Asset Management Plan, which sets out how limited resources are allocated to maintain a safe and reliable road network.
“Council is committed to providing as safe and reliable a road network for our community as resourcing will allow,” the spokesperson said. “Our approach is guided by Council’s Transport Asset Management Plan, which ensures resources are used effectively and areas are prioritised based on a set of evidence-based criteria.”
According to Council, a regular maintenance and grading schedule is in place across local roads, with minor repairs such as potholes addressed through routine inspections as well as reports made by community members.
“Our Infrastructure Services team regularly reviews priorities to reflect changes in road conditions to ensure our operational plan remains responsive and current,” the spokesperson said.
While Council did not specifically quantify how resident complaints influence maintenance scheduling, it confirmed that community reports form part of the information used to identify and address issues alongside inspections and asset condition assessments.
Council encouraged residents to continue reporting road defects to assist in monitoring conditions across the network, particularly following periods of heavy rain or increased traffic.
Lower Colo Road is one of many rural roads across the Hawkesbury that require ongoing maintenance, with Council noting that priorities can shift depending on safety risks, usage levels and available resources.
