On Australia Day, Hawkesbury City Council proudly hosted a Citizenship Ceremony welcoming twenty-nine new Australian citizens from diverse backgrounds to the region.

The event was a heartfelt celebration of Australia’s rich multicultural fabric, community spirit, and the shared values that unite people from all walks of life. Each new citizen took the oath of allegiance, officially becoming part of both the Hawkesbury community and the wider Australian nation.

Ten council members attended the ceremony welcoming the new citizens with Councillor Mike Creed reflecting on the significance of the occasion, saying:

“There’s no better way to mark Australia Day than welcoming new citizens who choose to call the Hawkesbury home and become part of our shared future. It’s a real privilege as a community leader to share such an important moment with our newest Australians.”

The citizenship ceremony included speeches from authoritative figures such as Susan Templeman MP and Robyn Preston MP. The ceremony also featured heartfelt remarks from Hawkesbury’s 2026 Australia Day Ambassador, Kumud Merani, who spoke warmly about her connection to the region. Ms Merani expressed her deep gratitude for being part of the Hawkesbury community, sharing how much she values the welcoming spirit and vibrant diversity she has experienced living here. Her reflections resonated with many in the audience, reinforcing the sense of pride and belonging that defines the Hawkesbury.

Through events like citizenship ceremonies, community programs and local initiatives, the Council works to strengthen connection, respect and a shared sense of pride in the Hawkesbury.

On the meaning of citizenship to the region’s cultural identity, Susan Templeman MP added:

"My message to people is that every Australian has the right to work, study or play in safety, and that only happens if we respect our differences, but share common beliefs and values of fairness and compassion."

Following the ceremony, attendees joined in Australia Day festivities, celebrating the nation’s heritage with food and activities that brought residents together in a joyful expression of cultural pride.
