While many people think of cricket as a young person’s game, every second Sunday at Bensons Lane a different story unfolds, one of skill, friendship and enduring passion for the sport.
The Hawkesbury Classics Over-50s and Over-60s Veterans teams are thriving as part of the Sydney-wide Senior Cricket Association, proving that the love of cricket doesn’t fade with age, it just gets smarter.
With 15 to 20 players available every round, Hawkesbury is one of the healthiest clubs in the competition, fielding strong teams in both age divisions. This year, local player Troy is lining up in the Over-50s Classics Division 2 side, helping represent the Hawkesbury against teams from right across the Sydney Basin.
The competition runs every second Sunday, with Hawkesbury’s home games played at Bensons Lane, a ground that has become a hub of community spirit, shared lunches and competitive but friendly cricket.
The season runs from October through to March, giving players a full summer of games while still allowing for family commitments and recovery time something that becomes more important with experience.
What makes the competition special is not just the cricket, but the camaraderie. Players range from former grade cricketers to weekend warriors who simply love being out in the middle. There are rivalries, plenty of laughs, and no shortage of advice on how to bowl that perfect slower ball or where to set a tricky field.
“It’s not just about the cricket anymore,” said Troy Myers. “It’s about getting together every couple of weeks, having a hit, sharing a laugh and staying connected with the Hawkesbury community.”
Matches see Hawkesbury travel to grounds across Sydney one fortnight and host visiting teams the next, creating a true basin-wide competition that connects players from Penrith to the Northern Beaches and everywhere in between.
For Troy and his teammates, it’s not about slowing down, it’s about staying in the game.
“Representing Hawkesbury means a lot,” Troy Myers said. “We’ve got a great group of blokes, strong numbers every week, and a club culture that makes people want to keep coming back.”
As the Classics and Veterans continue to grow, Hawkesbury is showing that cricket in the district is not just alive, it’s thriving well into its golden years.
