Inspired by Arthur Rutter

The Gazette has received a warm and sentimental email from Hawkesbury resident Arthur Rutter, who wished to share his thoughts on the arrival of jacaranda season in our region.

“The residents of the Hawkesbury do not have to travel to Grafton to view the purple views; we have them here in the Hawkesbury. Shades of The Purple Noons Transparent Night (with apologies to Arthur Streeton) are all around us. The trees are ablaze here in Windsor and Richmond. Spring is here and the profusion of jacarandas are in bloom. What more can you want?”

Each spring, Windsor and Richmond come alive with colour as the jacarandas reach their full bloom. Their soft violet petals brighten the streets, parks and walkways, creating a distinctive and much loved seasonal display.

For those wanting to experience the best of the jacaranda season, Windsor offers notable viewing spots along Court Street, Pitt Street, The Terrace in Howe Park, George Street in Governor Phillip Park, Bridge Street near the Toll House and historic Thompson Square. Richmond offers equally beautiful scenes along Lime Street, Toxana Street near Francis Street, Windsor Street beside Richmond Park, and Bourke and Dight Streets close to Icely Park.

As Arthur Rutter reminds us, there is no need to travel far in search of purple vistas. They are here at home, inviting all of us to step outside and enjoy the gentle beauty of spring in the Hawkesbury.
