For many young people in the Hawkesbury, getting a driver licence isn’t just about independence, it’s the key to getting a job.

In a region where public transport is limited and employment opportunities often require travel across the Hawkesbury or into Western Sydney, not having a licence can shut young people out of work before they’ve even started.

That’s where YouthSafe, working in collaboration with YES Youth & Community Services, is stepping in to remove one of the biggest barriers facing local youth.

Breaking Down the Barriers

Through the Driver Licensing Access Program (DLAP), funded by Transport for NSW and delivered locally by YouthSafe, eligible young people can receive practical support to obtain their learner licence and progress through the licensing system.

Support can include:

  • Preparation for the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)
  • Help navigating Service NSW requirements
  • Assistance overcoming literacy or confidence barriers
  • Guidance on supervised driving requirements
  • In some cases, financial assistance to help cover test-related costs

For young people connected with YES Youth & Community Services, the pathway becomes even clearer.

YES works with local youth to build employment skills, confidence and readiness for work. But as many employment providers will tell you — in the Hawkesbury, a licence is often the difference between getting the job and missing out.

By collaborating with YouthSafe, YES can connect young people directly into licensing support, ensuring that transport barriers don’t stand in the way of employment.

A Practical Step Toward Employment

Local employers frequently list a driver licence as either essential or highly desirable. In industries such as trades, hospitality, construction, agriculture and community services, reliable transport is often non-negotiable.

For a young person who may not have family support, financial resources, or confidence navigating government systems, the cost and complexity of getting a licence can feel overwhelming.

This program changes that.

In Hawkesbury it provides structured guidance, mentoring and practical help by paying for driver knowledge tests (L Plates for all aged from 16 years up) and additional two free driving lessons with a young person is engaged with YES Employment.

At a time when youth employment remains a critical issue, particularly in regional communities, initiatives like this are about unlocking potential that already exists in the Hawkesbury.

Helping a young person pass their Driver Knowledge Test may seem simple but the ripple effect is significant:

  • Greater access to work
  • Increased independence
  • Stronger local workforce participation
  • Reduced social isolation

In short, it’s an investment in the future of our region.

How to Access Support

Young people aged 16 and over who are experiencing barriers to obtaining their licence can enquire through:

  • YouthSafe (Driver Licensing Access Program)
  • YES Youth & Community Services

Parents, carers, schools and local employers are also encouraged to refer young people who may benefit.

Because in the Hawkesbury, supporting our youth to get on the road isn’t just about driving, it’s about opportunity.
