Hobartville Public School might be known for its flying horse emblem, but there’s another four-legged friend winning hearts across the playground Teddy the dog, the school’s beloved “Community Connection Dog.”

Teddy, handled by local resident Melanie, recently made waves at a local Puppy & Paws Expo, proudly representing Hobartville Public School and taking home the title of Best Community Connection Dog. The win wasn’t just about wagging tails; it highlighted the school’s strong focus on wellbeing, inclusion, and community spirit.

While Teddy isn’t the school’s official mascot, that honour still belongs to the historic flying horse, a nod to Hobartville’s rich equestrian heritage and links to the nearby RAAF base. However children at the Expo say he’s a real-life mascot for kindness and connection.

Principal and staff have often spoken about the importance of fostering positive mental health and belonging among students. Teddy’s gentle presence has become a living example of those values, greeting students, joining special events, and brightening everyone’s day.

As one attendee said, “Teddy represents everything that’s good about Hobartville friendly, welcoming, and full of heart.”

In a community built on history, resilience and care, Teddy is proof that sometimes the best ambassadors don’t wear badges or uniforms, they just wag their tails.
