More Than 100 Kayakers to Race on Hawkesbury River

More than 100 kayakers will take to the Hawkesbury River on Saturday 14 March launching from Macquarie Park at Windsor for the fourth race of the Paddle NSW Marathon Series.

Locally based Windsor Paddlesports Club is hosting the event, which attracts paddlers from all over the state and showcases the amazing waterways the Hawkesbury has to offer.

Windsor Paddlesports Club (WPSC) President Garry Baldry said the race is a highlight for spectators and competitors alike.

“WPSC is fortunate to have some of the most enjoyable and accessible paddling in Sydney,” he said.

“Macquarie Park at Windsor has been a race location for the Paddle NSW State series for many years now and the race continues to attract paddlers of all ages and abilities due to our sandy beach access and pleasant river conditions.

“Kayaking action isn’t limited to the whitewater. Marathon kayaking involves portaging – a tricky manoeuvre where paddlers jump out of their boats and onto the beach, race along the shoreline carrying their craft for about 100m, before re-entering the water.

“There’s always lots of thrills and spills as some of Australia’s best marathon kayakers vie for individual and club points in the series.

“We’d encourage anyone interested in kayaking to come down and support the race. It runs from 10am to 12pm and there will be kayaks for sale and a barbecue raising funds for our club.”

Mr Baldry said the recent upgrades at Macquarie Park have made kayaking and stand up paddleboarding even more attractive for families who can enjoy the shade of the umbrellas, go for a paddle or enjoy the new play equipment.

“The new facilities are fantastic and really add to the atmosphere,” he said.

“WPSC has regular training and club racing, so there’s plenty of way to join in. We also have come-and-try events if you are interested in learning more about kayaking.

“Whether you are interested in a mosey along the river, or trying your hand at a race, kayaking is a great, low-impact sport with opportunities for all.”

The Paddle NSW Windsor race is 10am at Macquarie Park, Windsor on Saturday 14 March. To contact WPSC call Club Secretary Clayton Norman on 0414 256 360 or visit wpsc.org.au.
