Motorists travelling between Western Sydney and the Hawkesbury are being advised to plan ahead, with a series of night-time closures now underway on the M7 Motorway.
Transport for NSW has confirmed that temporary lane and directional closures between the M5 at Prestons and Richmond Road at Oakhurst will continue through to 31 March 2026, as part of scheduled maintenance and upgrade works.
The closures will primarily affect the stretch between Richmond Road, Oakhurst and Woodstock Avenue, Rooty Hill, a key link for Hawkesbury residents commuting to and from work, childcare and essential services.
While works are being carried out overnight to minimise disruption, traffic will be detoured off the M7 during closures, with only one direction closed at a time. Drivers can expect changed conditions between 9pm and 4am, with some nights extending to 4:30am.
For Hawkesbury residents, who already face longer travel times due to limited local infrastructure, these detours are expected to add pressure particularly for those balancing early starts, shift work or long-distance commutes.
Heavy vehicle operators are also being reminded that permit conditions remain in force, and any deviation from approved routes requires an updated permit through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
Transport for NSW has urged all motorists to follow signage and traffic controllers, observe reduced speed limits, and allow extra travel time.
Despite the inconvenience, the agency says the works are necessary to maintain safety and reliability on one of Western Sydney’s most important transport corridors.
Road users can stay updated via the Live Traffic NSW app, the livetraffic.com website, or by calling 132 701.
For the Hawkesbury community, the message is clear: plan ahead, take care on the roads, and expect a few slower nights over the coming fortnight.
