Parvo Alert for Hawkesbury Pet Owners

Table of Contents

RSPCA NSW is urging Hawkesbury dog owners to remain vigilant after confirmed cases of parvovirus were reported in Richmond this week.

Parvovirus (parvo) is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that affects unvaccinated dogs and puppies of any age. Without urgent veterinary treatment, survival rates are extremely low, with approximately 91 per cent of untreated dogs sadly not surviving.

The virus spreads easily through contact with infected dogs or contaminated environments, including parks, footpaths, backyards and shared spaces. RSPCA NSW is asking local residents to monitor their pets closely for symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea (often bloody), loss of appetite and fever.

Pet owners who suspect their dog may have parvovirus are urged to contact their veterinarian before attending and to follow instructions carefully to reduce the risk of spreading the virus to other animals. Owners should not enter veterinary premises until advised it is safe to do so.

While early veterinary care can significantly improve survival chances, RSPCA NSW stresses that vaccination remains the most effective form of prevention. All dog owners are encouraged to ensure their pets are up to date with the C3 vaccination, which protects against parvovirus and other serious diseases.
