Richmond Lions Sleepout braves the storm for Hope4U

“Although the weather was against us this year, with storms, constant rain and freezing temperatures, it only further demonstrated the reality that members of our community — and people right across the country — have to contend with each and every day.”

Torrential rain and bone-chilling winds couldn’t dampen the spirit of the Richmond Lions Club’s 2nd Annual Sleepout. Held at Richmond Oval on Saturday 2nd of August, local businesses, residents, and families turned up from 6:00 pm to show their support. Its purpose was to raise funds for Hope4U and shine a light on domestic violence and homelessness in the Hawkesbury area.

In Australia, family and domestic violence is the main reason why women leave their homes. As a result, many women and children may experience housing insecurity and, in some cases, homelessness (Fitz-Gibbon et al. 2022).

Despite storms and relentless downpours, community members gathered together under marquees and raincoats, showing the Hawkesbury’s trademark resilience and generosity. Richmond Lions member Scott Hinks said:

“Although the weather was against us this year, with storms, constant rain and freezing temperatures, it only further demonstrated the reality that members of our community — and people right across the country — have to contend with each and every day.”

The ladies of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) Hawkesbury Branch provided hot soup to warm attendees, while various members of the community turned out to lend their support. Among them were Member for Hawkesbury Robyn Preston, Shadow Minister for Homelessness and Domestic Violence Natasha Maclaren-Jones, as well as Deputy Mayor Sarah McMahon, and Councillors Mike Creed and Nathan Zamprogno.

Richmond Lions member Warren Doyle praised the incredible community spirit:

“It’s amazing how much our community supports each other. We’ve raised $7,000 on a very wet night, and I want to thank all the sponsors and everyone who donated and attended tonight.”

Both Scott and Warren highlighted that next year’s Sleepout will be even bigger, with plans to include additional activities to cater for families who are unable to sleep out but still wish to participate.

The Richmond Lions Club thanks all who braved the weather, proving once again that when it comes to supporting those in need, the Hawkesbury community will always turn up – rain, hail or shine.
