Safety Boost for Pedestrians near Richmond High School

Table of Contents

Pedestrian safety has been improved near Richmond High School with the completion of a new refuge island on Castlereagh Road.

Transport for NSW has installed the pedestrian refuge between Hereford Street and John Tebbutt Place, providing a safer crossing point for the many students and residents who use the busy road each day.

The refuge island offers pedestrians a protected space in the centre of the road, allowing them to cross Castlereagh Road in two stages rather than in one continuous movement. It also creates a more clearly defined crossing location, helping both pedestrians and drivers better anticipate where people are likely to cross.

The upgrade is particularly significant for Richmond High School, which has around 700 students. Many students walk to and from school or use nearby public transport, making pedestrian safety in the area a priority.

Transport for NSW said the project reflects its ongoing commitment to improving safety in areas with high pedestrian activity, especially around schools.

The works form part of the Road Safety Program, launched in early 2024, which aims to reduce crashes and improve safety outcomes across NSW roads. Through the program, the Australian and NSW governments are jointly investing $518 million in road safety projects statewide.

More than 30 road safety projects have already been completed across the Sydney region, with further upgrades planned in the coming months.

Construction on the Castlereagh Road pedestrian refuge island has now been completed, with the new facility already in use and delivering improved safety for students, families and the wider Richmond community.
