What began as a light-hearted conversation between friends on the Blue Mountains Book Trail, has become one of the Hawkesbury’s newest and most charming destinations. Julie Wicks and Sally Zarka, who have known each other for more than a decade since their boys started kindergarten together, were joking about how wonderful it would be to open their own bookshop. Just a few months later, that passing thought became The Book Attic.

“We were joking about putting a wine bar in it,” Sally laughs, “but then Julie texted me a week later and said, ‘I’m really thinking about opening a bookshop—want in?’”

From that moment, the pair moved fast. In just two and a half months, they found the perfect space, signed the lease, and began transforming what was once the heritage-listed stables of the Royal Hotel into a warm, welcoming bookstore.

“The walls have so much character,” Julie says. “We wanted shelves that complemented the space rather than hid it.”

Family and friends rolled up their sleeves to help, from building shelves to wiring lights, while their children pitched in after school. The result is a space that feels handcrafted, community-focused, and deeply personal.

Now open seven days a week—just in time for Christmas—The Book Attic offers a broad range of titles, from fiction to gardening, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that invites visitors to linger. Julie and Sally are keen to hear from readers about what they’d like to see on the shelves.

“It’s a community-led space,” Sally says. “We want to stock the books that interest our neighbours.”

Upstairs, the pair plan to host book clubs, author talks, and community events in the coming months, making the store a true gathering place for local book lovers. So pop in, say hello, and browse the shelves for your perfect read.

Over 150 people came through the doors on opening day, many staying for hours among the books.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” Julie admits. “From a dream to a real business in a few months—it’s hard to believe.”

It’s clear that for Julie and Sally, being surrounded by books and good people has made every step of the journey worthwhile.

The Book Attic is open Monday to Friday 9am–5:30pm, Saturdays 9am–4pm, and Sundays 10am–2pm—a perfect new nook for readers in the Hawkesbury.

A lot of people on our team have been affected by breast cancer, and I think it’s important to get together, have a chat, and share a meal.
