Hawkesbury residents are being urged to plan ahead, with Transport for NSW confirming that The Driftway will close for up to nine months from Wednesday 29 October 2025 as major works begin on Stage 1 of the New Richmond Bridge project.

The closure, stretching between Luxford Road and Londonderry Road, marks a significant milestone in the long-awaited infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving traffic safety, flood evacuation routes and long-term connectivity between the Hawkesbury and the broader Sydney basin.

According to Transport for NSW, night works will occur from Sunday 26 October to Thursday 6 November, Sundays through Thursdays between 8 pm and 5 am, followed by daytime work hours of 7 am–6 pm weekdays and 8 am–1 pm on Saturdays.

Detours will be in place, redirecting motorists via Londonderry Road, Reynolds Road and Luxford Road. Heavy vehicles and commuters are advised to allow extra travel time, with delays expected during peak periods.

The New Richmond Bridge Stage 1 works focus on improving intersections at The Driftway/Blacktown Road and The Driftway/Londonderry Road to enhance traffic flow and flood resilience. These upgrades will lay the groundwork for the new bridge and road approaches in Stage 2.

A Community Notification has been issued by Transport for NSW outlining work schedules, detours, and contact details for residents seeking more information.
