The historic Richmond Regent Theatre is nearing the end of a redevelopment that promises to breathe new life into one of the Hawkesbury’s most cherished cultural landmarks. Closed for the past year and a half, the Regent is now inching closer to reopening, with fans eager to see its unique charm and cinematic heritage restored.

After more than two decades without significant upgrades, co-owner Duncan Mackay said the project is about more than repairs, it is about safeguarding the theatre’s legacy while preparing it for a new era.

“When we bought the Regent, we saw a gem that had been neglected for too long. We felt a deep responsibility to restore it into a space the community could wholeheartedly embrace and cherish.” - Duncun Mackay

The revamped Regent will no longer operate solely as a twin cinema. Instead, it is being transformed into a multipurpose venue, capable of seating 520 people or expanding to 600 for larger events. While films will still be screened during school holidays and for special occasions, the focus will shift toward live performances, concerts, and community gatherings.

Preserving the theatre’s history has been a key focus of the project, with original features being carefully restored, a process Mackay describes as “a legacy for future generations.”

At the same time the renovations also aim to strike a balance between traditional and modern expectations.

“Today’s audience craves comfort, accessibility, and an unforgettable experience. Our vision for the Regent has guided us in harmoniously blending the old with the new.”

Community response has been strong, with locals sharing excitement and suggestions on social media. Mr Mackay believes the changes will appeal to both loyal patrons and a younger generation seeking experiences beyond streaming and multiplex cinemas.

“The rise of streaming platforms has transformed the cinema landscape,” he said. “Audiences now crave unique, immersive experiences, which is why our focus on live entertainment will resonate deeply. We aim to create a vibrant hub that celebrates creativity and culture.”

The new and improved Richmond Regent is looking to trial some exciting new events as of November this year, with the official relaunch planned for March of 2026.

“We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to experience the revitalized Regent.”
