With the festive season fast approaching, the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF) is urging everyone to enjoy the holidays safely and healthily.
Dr Erin Lalor AM, CEO of the ADF, said, “The holidays are a time for celebration, but alcohol and drug-related ambulance call outs tend to peak during this period. We want people to look after themselves and their loved ones.”
Here are some simple tips to reduce alcohol-related harms like accidents, injuries, and hangovers:
- Set a limit before you start drinking. Don’t feel pressured to drink heavily just because others are ordering rounds or offering drinks.
- Avoid pre-drinking. Having drinks before going out can increase your risk of harm.
- Pace yourself and hydrate. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks.
- Eat before and while you drink. Food slows alcohol absorption.
- Don’t drink and drive. Arrange a designated driver, taxi, or ride-share ahead of time. Remember, sobering up takes time, so don’t drive even the next day if you’re unsure.
For those considering using illicit drugs, there are ways to reduce risks:
- Do your research. Stay informed on the latest drug alerts.
- Start low and go slow. Take a small amount first and wait to see how it affects you.
- Avoid mixing drugs, including alcohol and medications. Mixing increases harm and unpredictability.
- Never drive under the influence of any drug.
- Don’t use drugs alone. Stay with trusted friends who can help if needed.
- Call 000 immediately if there is an emergency. Emergency services are there to help.
Dr Lalor also highlighted that the holidays can be emotionally challenging. “If you’re feeling stressed or anxious, try to reduce alcohol or drug use, as they can worsen those feelings.”
