A tragic incident at a Riverstone restaurant has left one man dead and seven others, including five police officers, hospitalised following a suspected gas leak.
Emergency services were called to the Haveli Indian restaurant in north-west Sydney late Monday night after reports of a strong gas smell inside the premises. According to ABC News, a 25-year-old man, believed to be working as a cleaner, was found unresponsive and later confirmed dead at the scene.
Seven other people – among them five police officers who were first on the scene – were taken to hospital after being exposed to the fumes. They were reported to be suffering from the effects of gas inhalation but are expected to recover.
Authorities are investigating the source of the leak, with carbon monoxide suspected as the cause. Fire and Rescue NSW crews in breathing apparatus conducted air monitoring and worked to make the site safe.
The death has shocked the local community, with Riverstone residents expressing sadness at the loss of a young life and concern for the first responders who became unwell while trying to help.
Police have confirmed inquiries are continuing, and SafeWork NSW has been notified.
This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by gas leaks in enclosed spaces. Authorities are urging all businesses and households to ensure their gas systems are regularly inspected and that workplaces have adequate ventilation.
The Hawkesbury community extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the young man whose life was cut short in this tragedy.
