Summer usually means sunny days and holidays not flu season. But this year, the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD), which includes the Hawkesbury area, is seeing an unexpected and significant rise in influenza cases the highest in over 10 years.
As of early December 2025, more than 11,300 flu cases have been reported, with November’s numbers ten times higher than the same month last year. The majority of cases are among young children aged 5 to 9, raising concerns for local families.
Dr Alvis Zibran, NBMLHD Public Health specialist, warns: “Influenza is highly contagious and much more serious than the common cold. Symptoms can last over a week and include fever, chills, cough, runny nose, joint pain, headaches, nausea, and vomiting.”
If you haven’t had your 2025 flu vaccine yet, it’s not too late. Dr Zibran urges everyone over six months of age to get vaccinated, especially those aged 65 and older or with health conditions.
Local residents are reminded to:
- Keep vaccinations for flu and COVID-19 up to date
- Stay home if unwell and wear a mask if you must go out
- Meet outdoors or in well-ventilated spaces, avoiding crowds
- Use rapid antigen tests before visiting vulnerable family or friends
- Talk with your doctor about antiviral medicines if you’re at high risk
- Practice good hygiene like regular handwashing
With flu circulating widely locally and overseas, it’s important Hawkesbury residents take these steps to protect themselves and their loved ones this summer.
