Hawkesbury City Council's Cr Eddie Dogramaci faced court today as a three-day hearing got underway, with the Director of Public Prosecutions dropping all three original charges against him at the outset and substituting a single new charge of attempted fraud.
The matter relates to the alleged misappropriation of council funds for the purchase of computer equipment. Cr Dogramaci has pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleges he dishonestly obtained approximately $4,000 from Hawkesbury City Council. During proceedings, the Magistrate questioned whether it was an appropriate use of court resources to allocate three days to an alleged attempted fraud involving $4,000.
Deputy Mayor Cr Sarah McMahon and Councillors Amanda Kotlash, Mary Lyons-Buckett and Danielle Wheeler attended the hearing, observing from the public gallery throughout the day. Their reasons for attending in person have not been stated, and the Gazette has not sought comment from those present.
Two council employees - Accounts Officer Patricia Krzeminski and General Counsel Craig Winn - are expected to give evidence as witnesses. The Magistrate warned those in the courtroom not to discuss the case with witnesses.
The hearing continues tomorrow.
