Community members gathered in the Council Chambers this week to celebrate the achievements and contributions of local women as part of International Women’s Day.

The event, hosted by Hawkesbury City Council, brought together men and women from across the region to reflect on this year’s global theme, “Give to Gain,” while strengthening connections within the community.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Sarah McMahon hosted the morning tea and said the event provided an important opportunity to recognise the generosity, commitment and influence of women across the Hawkesbury.

“Supporting and uplifting women is key to achieving gender equality,” Cr McMahon said.

“As individuals, organisations and community members, we can all give for gender equality. Whether it’s through sharing knowledge, providing resources, offering mentorship or simply giving our time, having a mindset of generosity and collaboration contributes to women’s advancement, which benefits everyone.”

The morning tea also provided an opportunity to present the Australia Day Sportsperson of the Year awards to two recipients who were unable to attend the official ceremony earlier this year.

Leanne Leach was recognised for her longstanding contribution to Hawkesbury Netball, while Mackenzie Patterson Hollibone was honoured for her dedication and achievements in showjumping.

Hawkesbury City Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett presented the awards and said the occasion was a fitting way to celebrate the achievements of both women.

“Having Leanne and Mackenzie here to receive their awards today was a very fitting way to celebrate International Women’s Day,” Cr Lyons-Buckett said.

“These two women are incredible contributors to their vocations and give so much of their time strengthening our community.”

Also attending the event were this year’s Citizen of the Year, Bruce Earle, and Young Citizen of the Year, Bailey Carle.

Their presence reflected the community’s shared commitment to recognising the leadership, service and influence of women across all areas of community life.

The event highlighted the ongoing importance of supporting and celebrating women in the Hawkesbury while encouraging the community to continue working together toward greater gender equality.
