Hawkesbury residents can add a splash of green and gold to their gardens while helping local wildlife as part of National Wattle Day celebrations this week.
The Hawkesbury Community Nursery at Mulgrave is offering 50 per cent off all wattle plants during two special open days.
The nursery will open from 9am to 1pm on Wednesday, September 2, and from 9am to noon on Saturday, September 5.
Seventeen different species of wattle will be available, with nursery staff on hand to help residents select plants suited to the soil, space and growing conditions at their homes.
Choosing the right species can improve a plant’s prospects of flourishing while avoiding problems caused by placing large or moisture-sensitive varieties in unsuitable locations.
Wattles or acacias are among Australia’s most recognisable native plants. Their golden flowers and green foliage inspired Australia’s national colours, while golden wattle, Acacia pycnantha, is the country’s national floral emblem.
National Wattle Day is celebrated on September 1 each year, marking the beginning of spring and recognising the plant’s place in Australia’s natural environment and cultural identity.
Wattles also play an important ecological role.
Their flowers provide food for insects, while seeds, foliage and the animals attracted to the plants support birds and other wildlife. Depending on the species and planting location, wattles can also provide shelter and habitat for birds, possums and gliders.
As native plants, appropriately selected local wattles can generally cope well with Australian conditions once established. They may also help create wildlife corridors, improve garden biodiversity and provide shade or screening.
Residents not looking for a wattle can still visit the nursery during the two open days and choose from its broader range of native plants.
The Hawkesbury Community Nursery is at 10 Mulgrave Road, Mulgrave, next to the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter.
