The rugged trails of the Blue Mountains once again played host to one of Australia’s toughest endurance events this March, as hundreds of runners took on the gruelling Six Foot Track Marathon. Among them was local competitor Jeff Ferrer, who returned to the iconic race with determination and left with a personal best.
Stretching 45 kilometres from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves, the Six Foot Track is no ordinary marathon. Known for its punishing descents, relentless climbs and unpredictable terrain, it tests not only physical endurance but mental resilience. Runners face steep drops early in the race, a river crossing at Coxs River, and a demanding uphill finish that has broken many competitors in years past.
For Ferrer, however, the challenge is part of the appeal.
Having competed in the event previously, he came into this year’s race with experience and a clear goal. Months of preparation paid off as he pushed through the difficult course to record his fastest time yet.
“It’s a tough race no matter how many times you do it,” Ferrer said after crossing the finish line. “You have to respect the course. But I felt stronger this year, especially in the later stages.”
Conditions on race day were typical of the event cool in the early morning before warming up as runners descended into the valleys. The river crossing provided a refreshing, if jolting, midway point, before the long grind toward Jenolan Caves tested tired legs.
Ferrer’s improved performance came down to smarter pacing and targeted training on hills, allowing him to conserve energy for the final stretch often considered the deciding section of the race.
The Six Foot Track Marathon continues to draw competitors from across the country, all eager to test themselves against one of Australia’s most demanding trail runs. For Ferrer, the event remains a highlight on the racing calendar.
“It’s one of those races that keeps calling you back,” he said. “There’s something special about it.”

With a personal best now under his belt, Ferrer has already hinted he may return again ready to take on the mountains once more.
