Measles alert Penrith area

Penrith case confirmed

Table of Contents

Health authorities are urging Hawkesbury residents to remain vigilant following a confirmed measles case in the Penrith area, with exposure sites identified across the Nepean region.

NSW Health has issued an alert for the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District after the infected was active in the community while infectious, raising concerns about potential spread.

Confirmed exposure locations include a supermarket in Jordan Springs and a major retail store in Penrith, with earlier alerts also linked to presentations at Nepean Hospital.

While the case is centred in Penrith, the warning extends beyond the immediate area, with strong daily movement between Penrith and the Hawkesbury for work, shopping, and healthcare.

Community urged to stay alert

Health officials say measles is highly contagious and can spread easily in public places, particularly indoor environments such as shopping centres and hospitals.

Residents are being advised to monitor for symptoms, particularly if they visited affected locations in mid-March.

Early symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Red, sore eyes

This is typically followed by a distinctive red rash, which often begins on the face before spreading across the body.

Symptoms can take up to 18 days to appear after exposure, meaning people may not immediately realise they have been infected.

What to do if you may have been exposed

Anyone who develops symptoms is urged to:

  • Call their GP or hospital ahead before attending
  • Avoid waiting rooms and public spaces
  • Follow medical advice to prevent further spread

Health authorities stress that early communication is critical to protecting others, particularly vulnerable members of the community.

Vaccination remains the best protection

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine remains the most effective protection against the virus and is available free of charge in Australia.

Most recent cases have occurred in individuals who are not fully vaccinated, prompting renewed calls for people to check their immunisation status.

A broader warning for the region

The alert comes amid a broader increase in measles cases across NSW, with health authorities warning that the virus may be circulating more widely in the community.

For Hawkesbury residents, the message is clear: this is not just a Penrith issue.

With strong links between the regions, including shared services and daily travel, local residents are being encouraged to remain aware, monitor symptoms, and seek medical advice if needed.
