A newly opened urgent care service in Windsor is already proving its value to the Hawkesbury community, with patient numbers exceeding expectations just weeks after opening.
The Windsor Medicare Urgent Care Clinic, funded by the Federal Government through Wentworth Healthcare, officially began seeing patients in February. The clinic is delivered by Myhealth Kable Street, operating as a separate service from the existing general practice.
Located on Level 1, 2 Kable Street, the clinic is open seven days a week, 365 days a year, from 8:00am to 10:00pm, offering bulk-billed urgent care for walk-in patients or those referred by a GP.
Strong start and community uptake
Clinic staff say the transition into operations has been smooth, supported by prior experience running urgent care services and a strong local GP workforce.
The clinic has been able to draw on established systems and experience, allowing for a seamless rollout in its first month, while many local doctors have embraced the model by taking on urgent care shifts alongside their usual general practice sessions.
Demand from the community has been particularly strong.
The Clinic recorded more patients than expected saying “While we anticipated high patient demand due to the clear need in the area, patient numbers have exceeded our expectations,”
"It has been very encouraging to see the community actively utilising the service, reinforcing the value and necessity of accessible urgent care."
Treating everyday urgent conditions
The clinic focuses on urgent but non-life-threatening conditions, helping to bridge the gap between general practice and hospital emergency departments.
Patients commonly present with injuries and illnesses such as fractures, lacerations and viral infection cases that require timely treatment but not necessarily hospital-level care.
By managing these conditions locally, the clinic is helping to ease pressure on busy emergency departments while improving access for patients.
Real impact for local families
The benefit of the service is already being felt by local families.
“One particularly meaningful example involved a grandmother who brought her grandchild to our clinic after attending the hospital, where they were advised of a long wait time,” the Clinic said.
These types of situations highlight the main purpose of the urgent care as the Clinic explained the grandmother chose to attend the Windsor Urgent Care Clinic for a quicker assessment and were back home before bedtime.
Staff say moments like this highlight the importance of having accessible urgent care close to home.
Looking ahead
The clinic is already planning to expand its services, with onsite radiology expected to be introduced in the coming months.
This addition will allow patients to access imaging at the same location, reducing the need for external referrals or hospital visits and further improving convenience.
As the service continues to grow, its focus remains on providing accessible, efficient care for the Hawkesbury community while complementing existing GP and hospital services.
