A teenage boy has been charged following an alleged armed home invasion attempt, vehicle fire, and police pursuit in the Hawkesbury in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to a property on Bocks Road, Oakville, about 2am on 4 April, after reports a group had driven a ute onto the property, smashed windows, and set the vehicle alight.

The ute, later confirmed to have been stolen from Riverstone, was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW crews.

Police allege the incident escalated to a serious threat against residents, with a firearm allegedly used during the confrontation. The occupants of the home, a man and woman both aged in their 50s, were left shaken but not physically injured.

Pursuit Through The Gables

On arrival, officers attached to Hawkesbury Police Area Command observed several individuals fleeing the scene, while another allegedly drove off in a second vehicle.

Police initiated a pursuit, with the driver allegedly reaching speeds of up to 120km/h in a 50km/h zone before the vehicle stopped on Fontana Drive in The Gables. The driver then fled on foot.

A coordinated search operation was launched involving PolAir, the Dog Unit, Raptor Squad, and officers from The Hills Police Area Command.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested a short time later and taken to Windsor Police Station.

Serious Charges Laid

The teenager has now been charged with seven offences, including:

  • Special aggravated break and enter with intent (armed with a dangerous weapon)
  • Possession of a shortened firearm without authority
  • Possession of a loaded firearm endangering life
  • Police pursuit – failing to stop and driving dangerously
  • Being carried in a stolen vehicle
  • Driving without a licence
  • Driving a vehicle taken without the owner’s consent

He has been refused bail and is due to appear before a children’s court on Sunday, 5 April.

A Concerning Escalation

While stolen vehicles and police pursuits are not new to the north-west growth corridor, this incident marks a troubling escalation bringing alleged violence, arson, and firearms into what is typically a quiet semi-rural Hawkesbury community.

Residents across Oakville and surrounding areas are being reminded to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.

COMMENTARY

Hawkesbury Crime Spike Renews Calls for Police and Emergency Resources

Image

A serious overnight incident in Oakville has reignited calls for increased police and emergency service resources across the Hawkesbury and Sydney’s north-west growth corridor.

The alleged attempted home invasion, involving a stolen vehicle, arson, and firearm threats, has left residents shaken and raised broader concerns about whether local services are keeping pace with rapid population growth.

Growth Outpacing Services

Suburbs including Oakville, The Gables and surrounding areas are among the fastest-growing in New South Wales, with new housing developments expanding into traditionally semi-rural communities.

However, community leaders say investment in frontline services has not kept up.

Officers from Hawkesbury Police Area Command responded swiftly to Saturday’s incident, supported by specialist units including PolAir and the Dog Unit. But the scale of the response has also highlighted how stretched local resources can become when serious incidents occur.

“We Need Presence, Not Just Response”

Local stakeholders say the issue is not the professionalism of police, but the level of resourcing available on the ground.

There are growing calls for:

  • Increased frontline police numbers in the Hawkesbury
  • Greater overnight patrol visibility in growth areas
  • Faster response capability across expanding suburbs
  • Long-term planning to align infrastructure with population growth

Residents have also raised concerns about the increasing frequency of incidents involving stolen vehicles and pursuits spilling into quieter residential areas.

Broader Service Gaps

The conversation extends beyond policing. Parts of the Hawkesbury, particularly west of the river continue to face:

  • Limited access to ambulance services
  • Gaps in healthcare and emergency response coverage
  • Long travel times for essential services

Community advocates argue that without coordinated investment, these gaps will widen as development accelerates.

Saturday’s incident is being seen by many as a warning sign, not of a community in decline, but of one growing faster than its infrastructure.

The Hawkesbury remains a resilient and close-knit region, but there is increasing expectation that government planning must match that strength with practical support.

As investigations continue into the Oakville incident, attention is now turning to what comes next, and whether this moment prompts a renewed focus on delivering the services the region needs.
