Staff from the Hawkesbury Medicare Mental Health Centre are urging residents to seek support early, reminding the community that mental health challenges are not always predictable.
Alana and Myja, who work at the Richmond-based walk-in centre, spoke in a recent podcast interview about the importance of accessible, free mental health care in the Hawkesbury.
“Mental health episodes aren’t planned,” Alana said. “They can happen at any time — that’s why we’re open on public holidays as well.”
The centre operates under the national Medicare Mental Health program and allows people to attend without a referral, appointment or Mental Health Care Plan.
“You don’t need to be in crisis,” Myja said. “If you’re struggling, feeling overwhelmed, or just not quite yourself, you can walk in and speak to someone.”
No Referral Required
A key message from the interview was breaking down misconceptions around access.
Both women said many locals still assume they must see a GP before seeking help. However, the Richmond service is designed as a first point of contact, providing immediate support and helping connect people to ongoing services if required.
“We sit down, we listen, and we work out together what the next steps are,” Alana said.
The service supports people experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, or emotional distress, and includes clinicians and peer workers with lived experience.
Responding to Local Pressures
During the discussion, the pair acknowledged the unique pressures facing Hawkesbury residents, including cost-of-living stress and recovery from recent natural disasters.
“We see people of all ages and backgrounds,” Myja said. “Mental health doesn’t discriminate.”
They said community awareness remains an ongoing priority, with some residents still unaware that a free walk-in service operates locally.
“We’re here in Richmond, and we’re here for the community,” Alana said. “Sometimes just starting the conversation can make a real difference.”
The Hawkesbury Medicare Mental Health Centre is open extended hours throughout the week, including public holidays.
Residents can attend in person without an appointment.

This centre has been established to provide a safe, calm and welcoming space for adults who may be experiencing distress, facing a mental health crisis, or simply needing help navigating the right support services.
Operated by Neami National, the service offers support from trained mental health professionals, with no cost to patients and no referral required to walk in.
Located at Hawkesbury Medicare Mental Health Centre, the centre is open six days a week and provides walk-in support each afternoon.
Opening hours are:
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday: 9am to 5pm (walk-ins from 1pm to 5pm)
- Thursday and Saturday: 11am to 7pm (walk-ins from 1pm to 7pm)
By calling 1800 595 212 during business hours, residents can speak directly with a trained mental health professional who can assess their needs and connect them with appropriate local services, including support at the Hawkesbury centre or other nearby providers.
Importantly, support is not limited to those experiencing mental health challenges themselves. Friends, family members, and carers can also contact the service for advice on how to support someone they are concerned about.
While the Medicare Mental Health service provides vital support, it is not a crisis line. Anyone needing urgent help outside business hours is encouraged to contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or the NSW Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511. In an emergency, residents should call 000.
With increasing awareness around mental health and the importance of early intervention, the Hawkesbury Medicare Mental Health Centre offers a vital local resource providing support, guidance and a pathway to care for those who need it most.
