Artists Explore Nature's Hidden Connections in New Hawkesbury Exhibition

Saturday, June 6 • 11 AM - 1 PM FREE EVENT

A new exhibition opening at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery this month invites visitors to consider their relationship with the natural world through the eyes of two internationally recognised artists.

Entangled Grounds, running from 6 June to 23 August, brings together new works by artists Yandell Walton and Mar Serinyà Gou, developed during residencies at BigCi, an international artists' residency program located on the edge of the World Heritage-listed Wollemi National Park.

Presented in partnership with Hawkesbury Regional Gallery, the exhibition showcases the artists' responses to the unique landscape and ecology of the region following their selection as recipients of the 2024 BigCi Environmental Awards.

Rather than viewing nature as a backdrop or subject, Entangled Grounds explores how artists can work with the land as an active collaborator.

Walton's project, Becoming With, uses digitally generated environments shaped by environmental forces and non-human agency, creating immersive works that challenge traditional ideas about human control over nature.

In contrast, Serinyà Gou's Back to the Beginning draws on elemental, land-based actions and performances that respond directly to the landscape, encouraging reflection on humanity's connection to place and the environment.

Together, the works explore themes of transformation, interconnection and the ongoing cycles that shape both human and natural worlds.

The exhibition highlights the Hawkesbury's growing reputation as a centre for environmental arts practice, with the region's diverse landscapes continuing to inspire artists from Australia and around the world.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet one of the exhibiting artists during a free public program. Yandell Walton will discuss her residency experience and the development of her new body of work during an artist talk on Saturday, 6 June from 11am to 1pm.

The exhibition officially opens with a free launch event on Friday, 5 June from 6pm to 8pm, where guests can meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments.

Entangled Grounds will be on display at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery until 23 August, offering visitors a chance to experience contemporary artworks that encourage a deeper understanding of the connections between people, place and the environment.
