As students return to Richmond High School for the start of Term 3, many will notice the steady transformation taking place just across the campus boundary.
Rising from the grounds of Western Sydney University's Hawkesbury campus, the new Richmond Agricultural Centre is rapidly taking shape and promises to become one of the most significant investments in agricultural education ever made in the Hawkesbury.
When it opens at the beginning of the 2027 school year, the purpose-built facility will welcome students from Richmond High School into a unique learning environment that combines secondary education with university-level facilities, cutting-edge agricultural science and direct links to industry.
For generations, the Hawkesbury has been recognised as one of Australia's leading centres for agricultural education. The new Richmond Agricultural Centre builds on that proud history while preparing students for careers in a rapidly changing industry where technology, environmental science, robotics, artificial intelligence and sustainable food production are becoming as important as traditional farming skills.
Construction Making Strong Progress
According to the latest NSW Department of Education project update, construction is progressing well.
Concrete slabs have been completed across the site, roofs have been installed on almost every building and work is continuing on internal walls and external cladding.
Solar panels have now been installed, while the new entrance from College Drive and staff and visitor parking areas have been completed.
The next stage will see the commencement of landscaping, painting, flooring, cabinetry and the fit-out of specialist learning spaces, while glazing will soon be installed on the Centre's greenhouse.
The project remains on schedule to be completed in late 2026, allowing the first students to commence classes on Day One of Term 1, 2027.
A Different Way of Learning
Unlike a traditional high school, the Richmond Agricultural Centre will operate in partnership with Richmond High School.
Students enrolled in Agricultural STEM programs will divide their learning between both campuses, spending part of the week at Richmond High School and part at the Agricultural Centre, where they will have access to specialist facilities unavailable in most NSW public schools.
The Centre will include:
- Ten classrooms;
- Five science laboratories;
- A greenhouse;
- Agricultural learning facilities;
- A multipurpose hall;
- An Aboriginal enterprise learning space;
- Covered outdoor learning areas;
- Administration facilities; and
- Student amenities.
Learning Alongside a University
What makes the Richmond Agricultural Centre unique is its location within the Western Sydney University Hawkesbury campus.
Students will learn alongside one of Australia's leading agricultural research institutions, providing opportunities to engage with university academics, researchers and industry professionals while still completing their secondary education.
The partnership is expected to strengthen pathways into university study, agricultural science, veterinary science, environmental management and food production.
