Bligh Park man charged with threat to kill MP

A Bligh Park man will face court in June after allegedly sending an online threat to kill a federal parliamentarian, following an investigation by the Australian Federal Police.

The 20-year-old was issued with a court attendance notice on Thursday, April 17, and is due to appear before Penrith Local Court on June 5, 2026.

Police allege the man used a telecommunications service to send a threatening message, with the investigation launched in March after authorities were notified of the alleged threat.

Officers attached to the AFP’s National Security Investigations unit executed a search warrant at a Bligh Park home on April 16 as part of the inquiry.

The man has been charged with two counts of using a telecommunications service to menace, harass or cause offence, contrary to section 474.17(1) of the Commonwealth Criminal Code. Each offence carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment.

AFP Acting Detective Inspector Chris Campbell said threats against elected officials would not be tolerated.

“Public officials, like anyone else in Australia, have the right to conduct their duties without receiving threats or abusive messages,” he said.
“Hiding behind a keyboard or phone does not mean you are anonymous and out of the AFP’s reach we have the resources and technology to find you and bring you before the courts.”

AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett last year announced the establishment of dedicated National Security Investigations teams to target individuals and groups causing significant harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including those targeting federal parliamentarians.

The official AFP report to the media does not publicly identify which federal parliamentarian was the target of the threat.
