Young people in the Hawkesbury are being encouraged to think big and back themselves this Youth Week, with a national program aimed at building confidence and independence among those with intellectual disability.
The Council for Intellectual Disability (CID) is inviting young people aged 15 to 26 to take part in its Young Leaders program, designed to help participants develop self-determination skills and connect with peers.
Supporting Young People to Lead Their Own Lives
The initiative aligns with this year’s Youth Week theme: “Dream, Do, Dare” a message focused on encouraging young people to set goals and take meaningful steps toward achieving them.
At the heart of the program is the concept of self-determination.
CID says people who are self-determined are those who decide what matters to them, take action to make it happen and believe in their own abilities.
The Young Leaders program aims to build these skills, giving participants the tools to make decisions, advocate for themselves and pursue their goals.
Online Event Open to Hawkesbury Participants
As part of Youth Week celebrations, CID will host an online information session where young people and families can learn more about the program.
Event details:
- Date: 24 April 2026
- Time: 12pm to 1pm
- Format: Online
The session will provide an overview of how the program works and how young people can get involved.
A separate workshop for young people with intellectual disability is also being offered.
Building Confidence Through Connection
Organisers say the program is about more than skills, it’s about connection.
Participants have the opportunity to meet others with similar experiences, share ideas and goals and build supportive networks.
For regional communities like the Hawkesbury, where access to specialised programs can sometimes be limited, online initiatives like this provide an important pathway to participation.
Real Stories, Real Outcomes
As part of the campaign, CID is sharing stories of young people who have already taken part, including participants who have turned their ambitions into action through the program.
These stories highlight how building confidence and self-belief can lead to real-world outcomes.
A Step Toward Inclusion
Programs like Young Leaders are part of a broader push to ensure young people with disability are supported to participate fully in community life.
By focusing on leadership, independence and self-advocacy, the initiative reflects a shift toward empowering individuals to shape their own futures.
