Motorists using The Driftway face two weekends of around-the-clock roadworks and a closure lasting up to five months as work continues on the New Richmond Bridge project.
Transport for NSW says part of The Driftway between Blacktown Road and Luxford Road will close from Friday, 16 October 2026. The work forms part of Stage 1, which is upgrading The Driftway intersections at Blacktown Road and Londonderry Road to improve safety and flood resilience.
Before that extended closure, pavement work across Blacktown Road and Racecourse Road is scheduled to run continuously from 7pm Friday, 2 October, to 4am Tuesday, 6 October, weather permitting. Racecourse Road will be closed at Blacktown Road from 4pm Sunday, 4 October, to 4am Tuesday, 6 October, with detours in place.
A second period of continuous day and night pavement work across Blacktown Road is planned from 7pm Friday, 16 October, to 4am Monday, 19 October, weather permitting.
From Monday, 19 October, traffic will switch to the new road alignment. Transport says the eastbound lane of The Driftway between Blacktown Road and Luxford Road will close, while the westbound lane will remain open between Blacktown Road and Reynolds Road.
For westbound travel from Blacktown Road towards Londonderry Road, drivers should use Reynolds Road. Motorists coming from Racecourse Road who need to head south on Blacktown Road should use the George Street roundabout to turn around. There will be no access to Blacktown Road from The Driftway or Reynolds Road during the closure.
Residents of Reynolds, Clark and Luxford roads, and The Driftway between Reynolds Road and Londonderry Road, should use the detour via Londonderry Road, Paget Street, Lennox Road and Blacktown Road. Access from Luxford Road will be maintained for residents.
The Hawkesbury Waste Facility will remain accessible by a left turn from Blacktown Road. Vehicles leaving the facility will travel west along The Driftway and then onto Reynolds Road.
Transport says its usual construction hours are 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm Saturday, but the scheduled pavement work will continue overnight to reduce traffic disruption and protect workers and road users. All dates are subject to weather conditions.
Drivers should follow temporary signs and allow extra travel time during the changes.
