Hawkesbury residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals free of charge when the annual Chemical Cleanout Event returns to the Hawkesbury Showground.
The event will be held on Sunday, 16 August 2026, from 9am to 3.30pm at the Hawkesbury Showground, Racecourse Road, Clarendon, with entry via Gate 1.
Designed to make the disposal process simple and convenient, the drive-through event allows residents to remain in their vehicles while trained staff unload hazardous household chemicals from the boot or rear of the vehicle for safe disposal.
The annual cleanout helps prevent dangerous chemicals from ending up in household bins, waterways or the natural environment, reducing fire risks and protecting local ecosystems.
Residents can dispose of a wide range of common household hazardous materials, including:
- Paint and paint-related products
- Household cleaners
- Acids and alkalis
- Aerosols
- Car and household batteries
- Motor and cooking oils
- Gas bottles
- Fire extinguishers
- Pool and hobby chemicals
- Fluorescent tubes
- Smoke detectors
- Vapes
Council is encouraging residents to check their garages, sheds and cupboards for unwanted chemicals that may have accumulated over the years and take advantage of the free service.
To ensure the event runs smoothly, all eligible materials should be placed in the rear of the vehicle before arrival. Once at the site, motorists simply follow staff directions and remain in their vehicle while the materials are collected.
For those unable to attend on the day, many of the same items can be dropped off year-round at the Hawkesbury Community Recycling Centre, located at 1 The Driftway, South Windsor, which is open daily from 8am to 4pm.
The Chemical Cleanout program forms part of Council's ongoing efforts to encourage responsible waste management and reduce the environmental impacts of hazardous household chemicals.
Residents can find further information about the event, accepted materials and other recycling services through Hawkesbury City Council's website and the Chemical Cleanout program.
