Thousands of Hawkesbury households could soon reduce their electricity bills by taking advantage of a new Federal Government initiative offering up to three hours of free electricity each day.
The new Solar Sharer Offer, which begins this week, allows eligible households in New South Wales to use electricity free of charge between 11am and 2pm each day.
The scheme is designed to make better use of Australia's growing solar energy generation during the middle of the day, when electricity production from rooftop and large-scale solar farms is at its highest.
Who can access it?
Many Hawkesbury residents are expected to be eligible, including both homeowners and renters.
To qualify, households must:
- Live in New South Wales.
- Have a smart electricity meter installed.
- Be supplied by an eligible electricity retailer participating in the scheme.
- Not be connected through an embedded electricity network, such as some apartment complexes or retirement villages.
Importantly, you do not need to have rooftop solar panels to receive the free electricity.
However, households must opt in through their electricity retailer. The offer will not be applied automatically.
Up to 24kWh each day
Eligible households can use up to 24 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity free during the three-hour window.
For most families, that is enough to comfortably run several major appliances at once without incurring electricity charges during the free period.
Best ways to save
Residents can maximise their savings by shifting electricity-intensive jobs into the free period, including:
- Running washing machines and dryers
- Using dishwashers
- Charging electric vehicles
- Heating or cooling the home
- Operating pool pumps
- Using electric hot water systems where timers are installed
Simply changing the time these appliances operate could significantly reduce quarterly electricity bills.
Why is it being introduced?
Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the initiative was about making better use of Australia's abundant daytime solar generation.
Rather than allowing excess solar energy to go unused, the program encourages households to consume electricity when supply is plentiful, reducing pressure on the electricity grid during the expensive evening peak.
The Government says this should lower overall network costs while helping families reduce their power bills.
What about small businesses?
At this stage, the Solar Sharer Offer is only available to residential customers.
Small businesses, including many Hawkesbury shops and home-based businesses, are not eligible under the initial rollout.
Could the savings add up?
While actual savings will depend on each household's electricity use, families that regularly move energy-intensive activities into the free three-hour window could save hundreds of dollars over a year.
Modelling for a similar scheme estimates households could save between $139 and $429 annually, with electric vehicle owners potentially saving substantially more by charging during the free electricity period.
How to join
Residents interested in participating should contact their electricity retailer to check:
- whether they are eligible,
- whether their retailer is participating,
- whether they already have a compatible smart meter, and
- how to opt into the Solar Sharer Offer.
For many Hawkesbury families facing rising living costs, simply changing when they use electricity may prove to be one of the easiest ways to reduce household expenses.
