Hawkesbury Residents Save Water and Money

Sydney Water Program Help

With household budgets under increasing pressure, Hawkesbury residents connected to Sydney Water's network are being encouraged to take advantage of a program that can reduce water bills by fixing leaks and installing more water-efficient fittings.

Sydney Water's WaterFix Residential program provides homeowners with access to qualified plumbers who can identify visible water leaks, repair many minor leaks and install water-efficient taps, showerheads and toilets designed to reduce water consumption.

The program is available for a standard call-out fee of $44, while pensioners who receive a Sydney Water pension rebate pay just $16.50 for their first appointment. Charges are added to the customer's next Sydney Water bill. Saturday appointments attract an additional surcharge.

According to Sydney Water, replacing older fixtures with modern four-star Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) products can significantly reduce household water use.

Potential savings include:

  • Up to 52 per cent less water from replacing inefficient taps.
  • Up to 50 per cent less water by installing a more efficient showerhead.
  • Up to 63 per cent less water by replacing an older single-flush toilet with a modern dual-flush model.

The service also includes advice on improving water efficiency around the home and repairing many visible leaks before they become costly problems.

Hidden leaks can waste thousands of litres of drinking water each year and often go unnoticed until an unusually high water bill arrives. Simple issues such as dripping taps, leaking toilets or worn fittings can steadily increase household water consumption over time.

Sydney Water says all work is undertaken by licensed plumbers and customers are under no obligation to proceed with recommended upgrades beyond the initial inspection. Residents are also free to compare quotes from other plumbers if they wish.

The WaterFix Residential program forms part of Sydney Water's broader water conservation strategy, aimed at reducing water demand across Greater Sydney while helping households lower their utility costs. The utility estimates the program will continue delivering substantial water savings over the coming years as more households participate.

Residents connected to the Sydney Water network can request a WaterFix Residential appointment online or by calling 1800 807 475. Tenants and landlords can also participate, although a signed owner consent form is required where the applicant is not the property owner.
