What should have been a simple trip home from the Hawkesbury Show on Satruday night turned into a frustrating and chaotic ordeal for hundreds of residents, after confusion at Clarendon Station left passengers stranded, misdirected and, in some cases, walking home.

It began with a moment that set the tone for the night, a mother left standing on the platform as train doors closed, while her husband, their pram and children were carried away toward Richmond without her.

The family, like many others, had followed advice to use public transport to leave the show, boarding what was expected to be the 9:15pm service from Clarendon to Richmond, where cars were parked. Instead, they found themselves caught in what one passenger described as “epic confusion” over which side of the platform the train would depart from.

Initially, there was an expectation the situation would be resolved quickly, with another train due within 20 minutes. But as the Gazette heard from its contributors Carren Maris Jones and Dan Saddler, the delays quickly escalated.

Train staff directed crowds of hundreds to switch platforms, only to redirect them back again when a train arrived. That train was later announced as heading to Blacktown, forcing already frustrated passengers to disembark and return once more.

In total, passengers were reportedly moved back and forth across platforms up to six times.

As tempers frayed and patience wore thin, some younger commuters abandoned the overcrowded footbridge altogether, choosing instead to jump the fence to cross tracks rather than fight through the crowd.

For one mother separated from her family, the situation was particularly distressing. Without a phone, she had no way to contact her husband and with the car keys in the pram, she feared he wouldn’t be able to return to collect her.

Tensions boiled over at times, with one commuter resorting to "a Karen attack" shouting in frustration that if a person using a mobility aid was not allowed on the next train, she would “ f... do something about it.”

Others simply gave up. Families with exhausted children began the long walk from Clarendon to Richmond, some pushing prams and others coaxing tired kids along dark roads.

Dan, one of the affected passengers, said the drawn-out confusion added to the stress of an already long day.

“It was past my bedtime and I have to be up early for church,” he announced to the surrounding crowd surprise and merriment, while Carren was managing a very tired 10-year-old who had performed at the show, along with a still-energised 15-year-old who thought the misdirection by the train station staff hilarious.

What began as a straightforward 9:15pm journey didn’t end until around 10:40pm a trip of over an hour for what is normally a short ride.

Despite the frustration, there was a sense of disbelief among many caught up in the situation.

“You couldn’t make it up,” Carren said, laughing at the absurdity of the experience after finally arriving in Richmond Station at 10:40pm.

The incident has raised questions about crowd management and communication at Clarendon Station during major events, with many calling for clearer direction and better planning to prevent a repeat of the night’s confusion.
