Knights, Vikings and Medieval Mayhem in Hawkesbury

Winterfest Returns to Hawkesbury Show Ground Saturday 4 July and Sunday 5 July 2026 10am to 5pm.

Knights, Vikings, warriors and wandering minstrels will descend on the Hawkesbury Showground as Winterfest returns for another weekend celebrating history, fantasy and medieval culture.

The popular annual event transforms the Hawkesbury Showground into a bustling medieval village, attracting thousands of visitors from across Sydney, the Blue Mountains and regional New South Wales.

Now regarded as one of Australia's largest medieval festivals, Winterfest combines historical reenactments, live combat demonstrations, markets, music, entertainment and family-friendly activities into a unique immersive experience.

Visitors can expect to encounter armoured knights engaged in full-contact combat, Viking encampments, medieval artisans, blacksmiths, merchants and performers recreating life from centuries past.

One of the festival's major attractions is the spectacular knightly tournaments, where competitors clad in armour test their skills before cheering crowds.

The event also features medieval markets offering handcrafted goods, costumes, jewellery, leatherwork, weapons replicas, food and other specialty items.

For many attendees, dressing in medieval costume has become part of the tradition, with visitors embracing the opportunity to step back in time and become part of the experience.

Organisers say Winterfest continues to grow in popularity because it appeals to a wide range of interests, from serious historical enthusiasts to families simply looking for a fun and memorable day out.

The festival also provides an opportunity for historical reenactment groups from across Australia to showcase their research, craftsmanship and dedication to preserving historical traditions.

While medieval Europe provides much of the inspiration for the event, Winterfest has evolved into a broader celebration of historical culture, fantasy, storytelling and community participation.

For local businesses, the festival provides an important tourism boost, bringing visitors into the Hawkesbury during the winter season and generating activity for accommodation providers, cafes, restaurants and retailers.

The Hawkesbury Showground has become synonymous with the event, providing the space required for battlefields, encampments, market stalls and entertainment areas.

Families attending can enjoy interactive displays, demonstrations and activities designed to give children a hands-on appreciation of history and traditional skills.

As winter settles across the district, organisers are encouraging residents to embrace the spirit of adventure and experience a world of knights, castles and legends without leaving the Hawkesbury.
