Many Hawkesbury residents who commute to work via Tallawong Metro Station are being urged to slow down and stay alert, with a new school zone coming into force around the permanent site of Tallawong Public School.
The warning comes as the school community prepares to begin Term 2 at its new home in Rouse Hill, after operating from a temporary campus in Riverstone during Term 1.
Transport authorities have confirmed a 40km/h school zone will apply on roads surrounding the school, including Tallawong Road, Terrara Road, Wheatley Street, Macquarie Road, Ellevsen Street and Natasha Parade, as well as a new road currently under construction parallel to Macquarie Road.
The reduced speed limit will operate between 8am and 9.30am and again from 2.30pm to 4pm on school days.
For Hawkesbury drivers who regularly travel through the area to access the Metro at Tallawong, the change is expected to have a noticeable impact on peak-hour traffic.
“Look out – kids about” is the clear message, with a mix of flashing and static school zone signs being installed, along with new road markings, to improve safety for students and families.
Two additional flashing school zone signs will also be installed on Tallawong Road, a key route for commuters heading to the station from the north-west growth area.
Work to install the signage will be carried out over two day shifts and one night shift between Monday, April 20 and Tuesday, April 21, weather permitting.
The move to the permanent campus marks a significant milestone for Tallawong Public School, which has rapidly grown alongside surrounding residential development.
But with that growth comes increased traffic and, for Hawkesbury commuters used to a clear run to the Metro, the new school zone serves as an important reminder to factor in extra travel time and prioritise safety.
Drivers are being encouraged to plan ahead, observe the reduced speed limits and remain vigilant, particularly during the busy morning and afternoon school periods.
