Motorists travelling between St Albans and Wisemans Ferry will soon notice changes to speed limits along sections of Settlers Road, with Transport for NSW confirming new permanent speed zones will be introduced from Monday, June 22.
The changes affect several sections of the popular rural route linking the Lower Macdonald Valley with Wisemans Ferry and are aimed at better matching speed limits to road conditions.
Under the new arrangements, the speed limit will increase to 60km/h on two sections of Settlers Road:
• Between The Pickled Wombat and 1602 Settlers Road; and
• Between the Lower Macdonald Rural Fire Brigade station and Wisemans Ferry West Bank.
Meanwhile, the speed limit on the section of Settlers Road between 595 Settlers Road and the Lower Macdonald Rural Fire Brigade will be reduced to 50km/h.
Transport for NSW will install new speed limit signs to reflect the changes, with the revised speed limits coming into effect once the signage has been erected.
Work crews will be on site for a single day shift between June 22 and July 24, weather permitting, to carry out the signage changes. Work will take place on weekdays between 7am and 5pm.
While the work is underway, drivers can expect temporary traffic controls, including lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h through the work zone.
The changes are likely to be welcomed by some motorists who regularly travel the route and have questioned the consistency of speed limits along different sections of the road. However, drivers are reminded that speed limits are only one factor in safe driving, with narrow road shoulders, winding sections and wildlife continuing to present hazards throughout the valley.
Settlers Road is an important connection for residents of St Albans, Lower Macdonald, Fernances Crossing and surrounding communities, as well as tourists visiting the area's historic villages, waterways and national parks.
Motorists are encouraged to obey all temporary traffic management measures while crews are installing the new signs and to remain alert for changed conditions.
