What if, for an afternoon, you could leave modern Windsor behind and step into the shoes of a Victorian visitor arriving in one of Australia's most important colonial towns?

On Saturday, June 6 at 1pm, history enthusiasts, families and curious locals are invited to gather at the Hawkesbury Regional Museum Theatrette for a unique presentation and virtual walk through George Street, Windsor.

The experience begins with a fascinating visual presentation that transports audiences back to the late nineteenth century, when Windsor stood proudly as one of New South Wales' most significant regional centres.

Imagine arriving by steam train at Windsor Station. The hiss of steam fills the air. Horses and carts rattle along the streets. Shopkeepers call from their doorways. Ladies in long dresses and gentlemen in hats stroll beneath the grand facades that still line George Street today.

Then comes the moment that Victorians regarded as nothing short of miraculous.

As dusk settles over the town, Windsor's new gaslights flicker to life.

The Hawkesbury, once indispensable to the growth and prosperity of Sydney, swelled with civic pride when the town embraced one of the great technological achievements of Queen Victoria's age. Gas lighting transformed the streetscape, bringing safety, elegance and modernity to the night.

The famous Victorian author Charles Dickens marvelled at gaslight's ability to turn darkness into illumination, describing a world where night becomes day. For Windsor residents, the arrival of gaslight represented progress itself.

This latest expansion of local historian Grant's popular presentation series reveals Windsor as few have ever seen it. Historic photographs have been painstakingly transformed from black-and-white images into lifelike colour, accompanied by atmospheric sound effects that recreate the sights and sounds of the era.

Many of the images featured have never before been publicly displayed.

The presentation will also showcase a number of remarkable gaslight scenes, including paintings by renowned artist George Hansell, whose works beautifully capture the warmth and romance of Windsor illuminated after dark.

This guided vitual walk is a rare opportunity to experience the town through the eyes of those who witnessed its transformation from colonial settlement to thriving Victorian centre.

Whether you are a long-time local, a lover of history, or simply curious about the stories hidden within Windsor's heritage streetscape, this promises to be an unforgettable afternoon.

All are welcome.
